The Virtues and You!

Early on in my journey to learn about our spiritual relationship with creation, I thought often of the Cardinal Virtues of prudence, temperance, fortitude and justice.  More specifically, temperance dominated my thoughts.  After all, temperance is about moderation and moderation is an ideal way to live a more "green" life.

In the next few weeks, I will discuss in more detail each of the cardinal virtues and how they relate to our relationship with creation.  First, I would like to provide you with an introductory understanding of the virtues in words that someone like myself can appreciate.

First prudence:  The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) lists the definition of prudence in paragraph 1806 as "the virtue that disposes practical reason to discern our true good in every circumstance and to choose the right means of achieving it."

Laura's version:  Use the brain God gave you to make the right choice.

justice:  (CCC 1807) "the moral virtue that consists in the constant and firm will to give their due to God and neighbor."

Laura's version:  Think of others (including God.)

fortitude:   (CCC 1808) "the moral virtue that ensures firmness in difficulties and constancy in the pursuit of the good."

Laura's version:  Don't give up on doing the right thing even when it's hard.

temperance:  (CCC 1809)"the moral virtue that moderates the attraction of pleasures and provides balance in the use of created goods."

Laura's version:  Enough is enough.

I hope this gives you an introduction to the virtues that will help you on your journey.

Many blessings,
Laura

NEXT WEEK:  "Wouldn't be prudent!"
